Meet Mother Liz, Our Priest in Charge

The Rev. Elizabeth Grohowski is a native of New York. She was ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests in February of 2022; The call to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Lewiston, NY and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Burt, NY marks her second call to ordained ministry, with her call to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Montrose, PA being her first. 

Mother Liz graduated from the School of Theology at The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee in May of 2021 with a Master of Divinity degree. Her academic interest at Sewanee was in the history of women in ministry up to and including the ordination of women as deacons, priests, and bishops. While at Sewanee, she was active on the pastoral care committee, sang with the Schola choir, and was appointed the head of the thurifers’ guild, the St. Florian Guild. In her senior year, she was awarded a study grant to attend St. George’s College in Jerusalem, Israel.

Prior to seminary, Mother Liz was an active lay leader in the church. She was a mentor of an Education for Ministry (EfM) group, was involved in the New York Episcopal Cursillo movement, served in various aspects of ministry, and assisted in leading a centering prayer group. She participated in mission trips to Mexico and completed the Compostela di Santiago in 2015. She has a strong interest in pastoral care, adult formation, and spiritual direction, and has trained in music healing. She has recently completed a second unit of Clinical Pastoral Education at Sisters Hospital. 

Before discerning a call to ordained ministry, Mother Liz worked in non-profit/ college education administration as assistant to the president of Math for America, as assistant to the president of the Auburn Theological Seminary, and for her alma mater, The Manhattan School of Music in the offices of the Registrar and Admission.  Concurrently, she worked for 30 years as a professional opera singer. She sang with The Metropolitan Opera, The Lyric Opera of Chicago, The New York City Opera as well as several other major opera companies. 

In addition to her degree from The University of the South, she holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Opera, cum laude from the Hartt School of Music at The University of Hartford in Connecticut, a Master of Music degree in Classical Vocal Performance from The Manhattan School of Music in New York, New York, and was a young artist at The Juilliard Opera Center in New York, New York.

Mother Liz enjoys travel, decorating, knitting, and attending concerts and the theatre.
